The notorious gangland enforcer, who spent 42 years in prison, fell critically ill after undergoing surgery on his left leg on Saturday.
His family took the decision to withdraw life support this morning after Fraser was placed into a medically-induced coma at the weekend. With his son Dave, 66, at his bedside, Fraser passed away this afternoon.
Fraser had been in Kings Hospital, in south London, where he underwent an operation on a fractured leg, believed to be an injury he had carried since the 1960s, on Friday.
But his ailing body was not strong enough to withstand surgery and complications saw him transferred to the intensive care unit.
Dave Fraser said: "We’re just glad he’s not in pain and isn’t suffering any more. He had a good innings and fought until the end but it was just too much for him."
Doctors only spotted that the infamous gangster, who spent a total of 42 years behind bars, had the injury after spending two weeks in hospital.
It is believed to be a reoccurrence of an old crack he suffered during brutal riots inside Parkhurst Prison, on the Isle of Wight, in 1969.
Fraser was said to be one of the ringleaders of the uprising that caused him to spend six weeks in hospital recovering from his injuries.
Despite his age, Fraser - dubbed "Britain’s most dangerous man" by two Home Secretaries - was given an ASBO last year following a fracas at an old people’s home after he refused to back down in a heated row over a chair.
Fraser, famed for pulling out rivals’ teeth with pliers in his heyday with south London crime family The Richardson Gang, went for a fellow pensioner and chased him down a corridor after he refused to budge out of the leather armchair.
A film about his life is said to be in the works.Self-confessed celebrity gangser Dave Courtney was among those to pay tribute to Fraser, writing on his Facebook page: I for one will miss him.
"Deepest condolences go out to his friends & family. May God rest his soul."
A spokeswoman for Kings Hospital declined to comment.
